“When will this nonsense harm our democracy?” Schumer (DNY) said on the Senate floor. “Using a Senate committee to spread misinformation about our own elections is not clear.” Schumer called on Johnson, Trump’s top ally, to stop the “absurd” investigation and for Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell to intervene. Trump’s campaign lawyers and his allies have lost dozens of court challenges across the country, with judges across the spectrum finding their claims unsubstantiated and detrimental to democracy. Earlier this week, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton appealed to the Supreme Court over the invalidation of election results in four war-torn states. The 16th Republican Attorney General also joined the long-running lawsuit. Trump meets with the group at the White House later on Thursday. When Congress convenes next month, Johnson did not rule out the possibility of joining some House Republicans in challenging the election college results. Utah Sen. Mitt Romney condemned the attempt and called it “crazy”. Johnson is the term of the head of the Homeland Security Committee – a perch he used to interrogate Biden’s son Hunter in addition to the 2016 Russia investigation – so he will resign in January. Johnson was re-elected in 2022.
