1 dead, several wounded in gunfire at a hotel in the Chicago area

Authorities say a shooting during a large rally at a Chicago suburban hotel left one man dead and several people injured.

BLOOMINGDALE, Ill. – An early Saturday shooting during a large rally at a Chicago suburban hotel left one man dead and several people injured, according to police.

The shooting occurred during “some kind of big meeting” between guests at Bloomingdale’s Indian Lakes Hotel, according to Bloomingdale’s director of public safety Frank Giammarese. Investigators were still gathering what happened, he said, but “it looks like there were a couple of different groups attending different events at the hotel” when “something happened and that was when the shooting occurred,” mainly in the corridors of the hotel. ”

People were fleeing the hotel when officers arrived around 2:35 a.m. in response to a report of gunfire on the fifth floor. Officers found “several apparent victims of gunfire” inside, police said in a press release.

James McGill Jr., 27, of Chicago, was pronounced dead at a hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Office, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

As many as six more people were affected by gunfire, but the exact number was unknown because several people fled, including one or more possible suspects, Giammarese said. No police officer was shot, he said.

He said there have been “constant concerns” about large meetings at the hotel in the recent past.

Located about 30 miles (48 miles) west of downtown Chicago, the five-story Indian Lakes Hotel offers 300 newly renovated rooms and more than 650 square feet of event space, according to the website of the complex.
