$ 1,400 stimulus check: House Democrats plan to exclude families earning more than $ 200,000

Comparing Biden and GOP stimulus plans

But payments would be eliminated more quickly than in the previous rounds and would completely cut people earning more than $ 100,000 and couples earning more than $ 200,000, according to the text of the bill, which the Roads and Means Committee of the House is scheduled to debate Wednesday.

According to the plan presented Monday by Massachusetts Democrat President Richard Neal, the full payment would go to people earning less than $ 75,000 a year and married couples earning less than $ 150,000, like previous stimulus checks. Joint declarants will receive $ 2,800 plus $ 1,400 more per dependent.

It would not restrict eligibility as significantly as a Republican-supported proposal, which would have excluded some 29 million households that received previous payments.

The GOP plan provided for payments of less than $ 1,000 to people earning less than $ 40,000 a year and to couples earning less than $ 80,000. Payments would be eliminated more quickly, eliminating people who would earn more than $ 50,000 and couples who would earn more than $ 100,000.

After meeting with Republicans last week, President Joe Biden indicated he was open to lowering income thresholds. On Sunday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told CNN that the president “is willing to work with Congress to find a good structure for these payments.”
Biden has said he would like bipartisan support for his $ 1.9 trillion Covid relief bill, but he wants to get money in the pockets of struggling Americans as soon as possible. Democrats in Congress are moving forward with a legislative procedure known as reconciliation that will facilitate the passage of a bill without Republican support.

But for the Senate to pass the bill, Democrats will likely need the vote of Sen. Joe Manchin, a key moderate Democrat from West Virginia. He also suggested that a new round of stimulus payments should be more specific than the previous ones.

Much remains to be done until a final text of the invoice is agreed and the income thresholds can be changed. Lawmakers hope to pass the legislation before March 14th.
