Welcome to the 2024 CSR primaries.
While no Republican has yet submitted a formal candidacy for the presidency, several potential high-profile 2024 aspirants eager to oust Biden pile up with the 154-member CSR, Capitol Hill’s largest group of Republicans. Early times with grassroots conservatives allow these potential candidates to test their campaign messages and policies, while cultivating relationships that could lead to valuable political endorsements and fundraising connections.
“Many of the leading Republican voices have contacted us,” RSC President Jim Banks (R-Ind.) Said in an interview, “because the Republican Studies Committee has really been the catalyst for developing the Republican agenda in this new era and find out where our party is going from here, what our representation of the party is, what our agenda is ”.
“We are a political group, so as we develop an agenda, we have become very attractive to leading Republican voices and 2024 aspirants who want to come and be a part of it.”
This “new era” is one in which Democrats control all the levers of power in Washington and where Trump no longer occupies the White House, but remains a major Republican party force. Banks and the CSR have spent the first months of the new Congress working on how to unite the party factions behind a conservative agenda that will propel Republicans to a majority next year, with the help of some of the aspirants to the 2024.
This week, Pompeo, a former member of the House who served as Trump’s secretary of state, will pay his second visit in four months to the CSR. He has been partnering with CSR on a proposal from Iran and will appear at a Capitol Hill press conference on Wednesday with members to make it known, The Hill has learned.
Another former Trump official, former United Nations Ambassador Haley, is scheduled to speak to the CSR later this spring, as is Rubio, the Florida Republican Party senator who ran for president against Trump on 2016 and is studying another candidacy in 2024.
Banks said he hopes former Vice President Pence, a fellow Hoosier who served as CSR president when he was in the House, will be able to attend the group’s annual retreat later this year.

“It’s a schmooze party. They’re not there because they’re worried about Tim Burchett’s baby girl, Isabel, and how she did it to him [horse] race this weekend. … They’re worried about getting to the White House, ”the Tennessee Republican added.
But while many of these ambitious Republicans are moving toward a 2024 candidacy, with visits to early primary states and meetings with donors and lawmakers, they are waiting for a signal from Trump on whether he will take another shot at the White House. In fact, some members of the CSR would like nothing better than the 45th president addressing the Conservative group.
“We have a lot of leaders in our party, so it’s good that they come and are there. But the first invitation should be Donald Trump, ”Rep. Banks said the CSR would “welcome” a visit from Trump, who lives at his resort in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, but the president has not tried to secure a meeting.
Meanwhile, during a full CSR lunch at the Capitol Hill Club, Christie suggested it was time for the party to put Trump in the rearview mirror. The former governor had previously said Trump’s actions led to the January 6 assault on the Capitol, which he described as a “contested crime.” Last week, Christie said Trump had cost Republicans the White House and the Senate.
“We did not lose the White House because the American people do not agree with our ideas and support what [Democrats] they are trying to do it right now. We know why we lost. We know why we lost, and so does President Trump, ”Christie told CSR members Real and clear policy.
“I told the president 131 days out, if we don’t erase some of this madness, his behavior will hide his achievements. And if that becomes an election for student council president, we won’t win because [Biden] it does not offend anyone. “
Just four months at the helm of CSR, Banks, a 41-year-old Afghanistan war veteran and Navy reservist, wants the Conservative group to bomb pro-Trump policies, without going crazy. A vocal hawk from China, Banks worked with Cotton where legislation to combat misinformation Chinese Communist Party campaigns.
This month, he led an eight-member CSR delegation to the border, an effort to highlight the “humanitarian crisis” the group said was created by Biden’s immigration policies.

His message: Trump won over working-class voters and now Republicans need to “permanently become the working-class party.”
“These were my private thoughts that I shared with leader McCarthy about where I think our party should go to win the majority in 2022 and regain the White House in 2024,” Banks said, “and exposed a message and an agenda that could attract working-class voters and keep Trump voters safe. ”

But Cole said he has no 2024 favorites if Trump decides to run another race.
“It’s too early to make those decisions,” Cole said.
