VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Three people, including a brother and a sister, were killed and two more were injured Tuesday night in a mishap accident involving an alleged armed pirate on Interstate 95 in Volusia County, according to authorities.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said the crash involved a man wanted in an armed car attack in Orange County. The man, whose name and age have not been released, died in a head-on collision with an SUV, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The SUV driver, a 21-year-old Wisconsin man, and his 18-year-old sister, a front-seat passenger, also died in the crash, the FHP said. A 17-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy, who were also riding in the SUV, were seriously injured and taken to hospitals, according to an FHP report. All four were wearing seat belts, the FHP said.

Investigators from the Volusia County Sheriff said that before the crash, the alleged pirate walked away from Flagler County deputies, turned off the lights and entered Volusia County.

Officials said once the man entered Volusia County, deputies from the county sheriff’s office chased them. The sheriff’s office said the man made a change of direction on Interstate 95 and lawmakers put an end to the chase and tried to stop traffic heading south.

Deputies said the man headed north down the southbound lanes and crashed into the SUV near exit 260A.

Both the drivers and the 18-year-old woman were pronounced dead at the scene, the FHP said.

One of the surviving victims was taken to Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital at Orlando Health and the other was taken to Halifax Health.

Details of the armed abduction, including when it occurred, have not been released.

An investigation is ongoing.
