39 deaths with COVID-19 were added to the Iowa total as the number of cases increases at a slower pace

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – The number of new coronavirus cases detected in the last week in Iowa continues at a similar rate to the end of January, but growth in new cases slowed slightly, according to new state data .

On Wednesday afternoon, the Iowa Department of Public Health said 8,308 people in Iowa tested positive for COVID-19 for the first time during the week between Wednesday, Aug. 25 and Tuesday, Aug. 31. This makes an average of about 1,186.9 new cases for during this time period, higher than the average daily cases of 1,016.0 in the previous week.

The 8,308 new cases this week were 16.8% higher than the 7,112 cases the previous week. This is less than the 24.8% change between the case count from the previous two weeks. The change was also much lower than the change in weekly counts observed through July and early August, which showed increases of between 51% and 71% each week.

The data show that 22% of last week’s positive tests were done on children aged 17 and under and 20% of the positive ones were among teenagers and 20-year-olds, according to an analysis by the Associated Press.

A further 39 people were added who died with COVID-19 to the state total, which is now 6,307 since the start of the pandemic.

The state does not make hospitalization data available until Wednesday evening.

Although the tests increased to 21,598 tests processed in the last week, the positivity rate for this batch of tests remained very high, at 38.5%. A total of 1,912,356 people have been tested for COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

Over the past week, an additional 34,960 doses of COVID-19 vaccine were administered in the state, a rate quite similar to that of recent weeks. A total of 3,219,337 individual doses of the vaccine have been administered in Iowa. 1,612,253 people completed the vaccination course, an increase of 18,696 since last week. 132,352 people have received the first dose of shots and are expecting a second, a drop of 1,429 from this time last week and reversing the trend of more people waiting for the second shot each week since mid-July.
