Macy’s has notified employees of about 45 department stores that will close in the middle of this year, CNBC reported.

The closures are part of a plan previously announced by Macy’s to close 125 locations in 2023, which the retailer outlined last February.

“As previously announced, Macy’s is committed to resizing the rights of our store fleet by concentrating our existing commercial locations in desired and well-traveled A and B malls,” a spokeswoman told CNBC in a statement .

“To that end, we announced today several store closures that meet the guidelines we provided in February 2020,” he said. “These closures bring us closer to achieving the right combination of mall-based stores.”

Clearance sales have already begun in some places and the rest will begin later this month. CNBC was unable to immediately obtain a list of approximately 45 sites.

Macy’s operates 544 of its eponymous department stores, along with 34 Bloomingdale locations, 19 Bloomingdale outlets and 166 Bluemercury stores, according to its website.
