Ed Commanda | Reno Gazette Journal Las Vegas – Five cyclists were killed and four others were injured while traveling on a highway to celebrate a cyclist’s rest, officials said. Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman Jason Brodsuk said Thursday morning the crash occurred about 95 miles south of Boulder City, about 35 miles away. At 9:40 a.m., a box truck collided with a group of about 20 cyclists. Authorities say four men and a woman were killed at the scene. Their names were not immediately released. The box truck remained at the scene for several hours after the collision, prompting authorities to investigate what caused the crash. What caused the accident? NHP trooper Travis Smacka said he did not expect an initial report on what caused the crash until Friday. “It doesn’t seem to be a defect,” Brochuk said. “It appears to be a tragic accident.” Three of the other 4 people injured in the crash were cyclists. A helicopter flew to a partial hospital in critical condition. The two-wheeler riders were part of an organized journey, Brodsuk said. There was an accessory vehicle following them with flashers. The driver of the chased vehicle was injured and taken to Sunrise Hospital. The driver of the box truck was not injured. Nevada Department of Transportation spokesman Tony Illia said the southern section of U.S. Highway 95 will remain closed until 6 p.m. Thursday. Authorities registered three cyclists in Clark County from 2020 to November – a 50% drop from 2019. One of the social cyclists was on a retirement trip, “said Weeks.” Everyone is very sad and upset. It is horrible that something like this is going to happen. There really are no words. “This tragedy shocked the close cycling community of southern Nevada.” We all ride together, “he said for weeks. . “The shoulder on the side of that highway is wide enough to fit three cars,” Weeks said. “We don’t know how someone got so far off the road. All of them are very experienced cyclists. It’s not like they’ve been riding on the road by accident. “This is not the first time the riders have traveled.” They ride 10,000 miles a year. Some people run professionally, “Weeks said.” How did something like this go wrong?
