New Delhi:
Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund, a lesser-known Taliban leader on the United Nations terrorism list, will lead a new government “in office” in Afghanistan. Akhund and other names probably ended after Pak ISI chief Faiz Hameed visited Afghanistan over the weekend

Key points of the mullah Hassan Akhund:

  1. He has headed the Taliban’s board of directors and decision-making body, the “Rehbari Shura,” for 20 years.

  2. He was a minister in the Taliban government in Afghanistan before the war with the United States began in 2001.

  3. He is known to be more of a religious leader than a military one

  4. It is from Kandahar, the cradle of the Taliban. He was one of the founders of the armed movement.

  5. He is said to have sanctioned the destruction of the iconic Bamiyan Buddhas in 2001, declaring it a “religious duty”.
