LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – A Southland family is suffering extraordinary losses after a mother of six died of coronavirus complications a few days after delivery.
Veronica Guevara-Giron, 37, died Thursday shortly after testing positive for coronavirus while eight months pregnant with her youngest daughter.
“She started saying she couldn’t breathe, she developed a cough that couldn’t go away, so they ended up taking her to the hospital,” her sister-in-law Nathalia Giron said.
After fighting for more than a week, with only oxygen, doctors delivered Imani five weeks earlier, and took the newborn to the NICU before his mother even held him.
A day later, Guevara-Giron was placed on a fan and never removed.
“They called her husband and said she wouldn’t get better so he could come see her,” Nathalia Giron said.
Without any underlying condition other than pregnancy, this family wants to make clear how dangerous this virus can be.
“His first thing was to be safe,” Giron said.
With one child in the hospital and five more children at home, this family has created a GoFundMe page to help the family and husband of Guevara-Giron, who works in sanitation in the city.
“We’re trying to see if his father can stay a little longer at home,” Giron said.
Although this family will somehow overcome it, they will never recover what was taken away.
“We can give all the love and support a family can give, but we will never represent the mother she was,” Giron said.
