70-year-old duck hunter who allegedly killed 2 men found dead in the swamp

REELFOOT LAKE, Tennessee – David Vowell, the 70-year-old man accused of killing two fellow duck hunters in rural Tennessee earlier this week, was found dead Saturday.

Vowell was found dead in Lake Reelfoot, not far from where the two men were fatally shot Monday, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said.

Chance Black, 26, and Zachery Grooms, 25, were at Reelfoot Lake in northwestern Tennessee Monday morning when Vowell approached them and entered into a verbal altercation, the prosecutor said. of Tommy Thomas District on ABC News. Vowell allegedly opened fire and killed both Black and Grooms.

Thomas said earlier this week that it was unknown if Vowell knew the two victims.

Vowell’s body was found Saturday around 3 p.m., the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said. Authorities said he was identified positively, but an autopsy would be performed. No cause of death was announced.

Vowell had fled the shooting scene on foot when his boat was recovered and the car he was driving to the ship’s ramp was also confiscated, Thomas said Wednesday.

He had been wanted for two counts of first-degree murder. He was considered armed and dangerous, according to authorities.

The search was conducted in a large, very rural area, Reelfoot Lake State Park, near the Missouri and Kentucky borders. Lake Reelfoot itself has an area of ​​15,000 acres and is surrounded by a thick, murky swamp full of cypress trees.

On Friday, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation released images that scoured the area, showing the adverse conditions they were dealing with.
