Tesla will suspend production of its Model S and Model X for 18 days from December 24. CNBC Announced. It is not immediately clear why or what the company will do with the two taxes during the strike, but workers on those excise taxes will receive one week’s pay, some paid leave, and opportunities to work on other teams within the company.
The memo also states that workers are coming forward to help deliver vehicles to customers when production has stopped.
Automotive Industry Analyst Edward Knightmeyer noted Tesla is seeking tax breaks from California for the equipment needed to build 195,000 Model S and Model X vehicles by 2021. The company told the state of California that it would expand its production capacity in anticipation of producing an additional 118,000 models. S and X vehicles per year, ”at its planned annual rate of approximately 77,000 models of S and X vehicles.
In the third quarter of 2020, Tesla produced 145,000 vehicles and delivered 139,300 vehicles. Of that number, Tesla produced 17,000 Model S and X vehicles, of which 15,200 were delivered.
Tesla is building its next plant in Austin, Texas, and CEO Elon Musk has threatened to expel all Tesla production from California. He confirmed that he has moved his private home from California to Texas, which is estimated to save him millions in taxes.
Musk said in a separate email to employees on Friday that demand for Tesla vehicles was “slightly higher than production this quarter” and urged employees to increase production as much as possible. During Tesla’s October Battery Day event, the company said it expects to deliver 500,000 vehicles by 2020. But by that time, the company had shipped 318,350 cars to customers, so it was expected to deliver more than 181,000 vehicles by the end of this year.
