Jalan Hurts made history in his first NFL start and helped the Philadelphia Eagles avoid a four-game defeat on Sunday.
But that doesn’t mean the former Alabama standout will be Philadelphia’s opening quarterback when the Eagles play Arizona cardinals next week.
Philadelphia defeated the New Orleans Saints 24-21, with Hurts completing 16 of 167 yards and completing 30 of 17 passes without a touchdown and interruption, and 106 yards in 18 carries.
Hurts ran 100 yards in NFL history and became the first quarterback to throw a touchdown pass in his first NFL start. Another quarterback – Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens in 2018 – rushed 100 yards in his first NFL start.
Hurtz became the second quarterback to win his first start when he faced a team that had won at least nine games in a row. The Saints won nine games and had the best record in the NFC at 10-2. Ron Javorski did so for the first time in 1975 when the Los Angeles Rams recorded a 10-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, winning 11 games.
Hurts not only broke the 100-yard quick mark, but also ran two touchdowns at Philadelphia Mile Sanders, 115 yards and 14 carats, including an 82-gauge scoring run. New Orleans went without allowing the opposing ball-carrier to reach 100 quick yards in 50 games in a row, the fourth longest streak in NFL history.
Philadelphia coach Doug Peterson has decided to replace Carson Vents with the Hurts against the Saints. The Eagles entered the game with a 3-8-1 record, and Wendt led the NFL in interruptions and turnover and was eliminated more than any quarterback in the NFL this season. (Hertz was not fired Sunday.)
In announcing his decision to pull off his five-year starter last week, Peterson was no more involved than Sunday’s start for Hurts, and he has ruled out which quarterback will start the Eagles ’next game after Sunday’s win.
When asked about the team’s QB against the Cardinals, Peterson said, “I’m going to enjoy this.” “I’m going home and relaxing. I’m with my family tonight. Enjoy this success and get ready for the week.”
Peterson said Hurts did what he hoped Rookie would do in his first start.
“Overall I thought there were some good things that gave us a spark overall as a team I was looking for,” Peterson said, “I think we were looking for as a team.
“Today this success is not about a guy. This win is about this team, how flexible this team is. … He was, frankly, part of the win, but a lot of guys in this football game have my hat on. “

“Jalan played well, frankly – we won the game,” Peterson said. “There are a lot of good shows out there tonight. Like I said, the defense has stepped up, the offensive line, our young recipients and frankly, Jalan. It’s a start, we’re happy with the success.”
“It took everyone in uniform to win this game. Not just a guy. I’m going to do it myself again: it takes a village to do these things, and Jolen was a part of it, yes, but it took a team effort to succeed, honestly. ”
Hurts delivered a similar message when it was his turn to speak to reporters.
“I think, first and foremost, it was a great team win,” Hurtz said. “Everyone played together, trusted each other, and this week we put an emphasis on – playing together, playing together, bringing energy and building our own power, moving in a hurry and going out there and trusting each other. I’m glad this team is done today.”
When asked if he thought he should start the next game, Hurtz said: “I think going into next week, I want to continue to impress those around me, I have to work hard every day.”

With 13:25 remaining in the second quarter, Hurts combined with wide receiver Alshan Jeffrey in the 15-yard touchdown to open the scoring. Philadelphia got a field goal and Sanders’ 82-yard DT run. But after the Hurks ran back-to-back snaps for 24 and 16 yards, Jack Elliott lost the 22-yard field goal in the final half of the first half.
Philadelphia moved 53 yards in six games after the Eagles’ leading Saints reduced the lead to three points in the third quarter.
Former Oxford High School star linebacker Juan Alexander hit New Zealand’s touchdown 1:24 with three points following a kick from the Hertz. The Eagles onsite kick was recovered, and Hertz knelt on the clock.
Hurtz said the Eagles’ performance was not up to “their game quality”.
“One thing when I look back on this game – we have a lot of money at the table,” Hurts said. “There’s a lot of money at the table we left there, so we’re very happy to have got a ‘W’ today against a good team, but we’re going to go back to work. We’ve got a 24-hour rule on this team. Lots of builds.
