Most contestants in Georgia’s Senate election have responded to reports describing a physical debate that took place during a rally in Stockbridge on Saturday morning. According to local news agencies, the incident took place due to public participation in the Democrats’ Get Out of the Vote event. One was allegedly assaulted by a pedestrian while holding a sign in support of Democratic candidates John Osof and Rafael Warnock.
“A passerby confronted a supporter with physical aggression,” Henry County Police Captain Randy Lee said in a statement later Saturday. Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Police are said to have arrested the suspect in connection with the battery charge. The names of the suspect and the victim have not been released.
Hours later, Osof and Warnock responded to the attack with news that Senator David Bertue, one of the current Republican candidates, was running for his Senate seat. The other, Senator Kelly Lofler, did not publicly comment on the attack until Sunday morning. Newsweek Reached Lofler’s campaign, but did not receive a response at the time of publication.
“There are not even words to explain that this kind of violence is completely unacceptable to any man. I hope other candidates in this election will condemn it and join me. I call on all our supporters to treat each other with respect,” Osaf said in a Saturday afternoon statement released by his campaign.

The Democrats continue their campaign against Bertie during the November general election. His Republican opponent shared a response to the attack on Twitter about two hours later.
In a message describing the controversy in an earlier post by Channel 2 Action News reporter Matt Johnson, Bertue said, “Such behavior is absolutely disgusting and has no place in our civil society.” “Pony and I are praying for the victim and we are grateful to law enforcement for arresting the suspected culprit.”

Warnock, who is currently campaigning for Lofler’s Senate seat before Jan. 5, shared his own message on Twitter on Saturday evening.
“I am relieved that the victim of this attack is recovering,” he wrote. “Violence has no place in our democracy. That is … something we must all accept.”
Georgia’s Senate races have become the center of national discourse as politicians and public figures across the country pour in contributions to the campaigns of all four candidates. The outcome of each congressional race will determine whether Democrats can seize control of the U.S. Senate from Republicans.
Newsweek Henry County Police, Stock Bridge’s primary law enforcement agency, was contacted for comment, but did not receive a response at the time of the release.
