Two top Republican officials in the Michigan state legislature on Monday made it clear that the government will not award its voters. Tensions are running high in the state ahead of its formal election college referendum.
State Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkie (R) and House Speaker Lee Chatfield (R) issued separate statements on Monday. The reports came as Michigan closed its legislative office buildings Monday amid credible violent threats.
“Michigan Democratic voters will be able to continue their duty free from violent threats and intimidation,” Shirky said in a statement. “Biden, who was elected president, and Harris, who was elected vice president, won the presidential election in Michigan. It is our responsibility as leaders to follow the law and move forward in pursuing policies that contribute to Michigan’s progress.”
Sherky has added pride to Trump over shortcomings in the electoral process that need to be rectified to avoid voting irregularities. But the government did not detect fraud to the extent of reversing the decision, he said.
Trump and some of his allies addressed Chadfield directly to divert popular vote results to state legislatures and to appoint their own voters to support Trump in the Electoral College. He cited a long-standing precedent in Michigan for awarding electoral college votes to the popular vote winner, which was confirmed in 2000 by the Supreme Court.
“Again, I fought hard for President Trump. No one wants him to win more than me, “said Chadfield. I think he has done an incredible job. But I love our republic. I do not understand why our rules, traditions and institutions are being jeopardized to pass a resolution that will change the electorate for Trump, because some people think that there may have been enough fraud to give him victory. “
“It’s unprecedented for good reason,” he said. “That’s why there is not enough support in the House to run a new electorate. I fear we will lose our country forever. This will bring mutual confirmed destruction to every future election as far as the Electoral College is concerned. I can not stand for it, I will not.”
Both Shirkie and Chadfield met with Trump at the White House last month as the president pressured him to cancel the election results.
Voters from every state are gathering on Monday to formally elect Joe Biden as the next president, as conspiracy theories suggest Trump fans stole the election from him. His continued claims about fraud, which have not been proven in court or verified by reconsideration, have led to security concerns in some states where voters may gather, including Michigan.
Michigan State Representative Gary Eisen was reprimanded by members of his own party on Monday after he and others commented that he planned to disrupt an election college poll at State Capitol in Lansing.
In a radio interview, Eisen did not specify what plans were in place to disrupt the Electoral College, but said “this will come across in the news later”. Eisen said he could not confirm that there would be no violence.
