While the defense coordinator’s plans for the Raiders are uncertain, NFL defensive guru Wade Phillips welcomes the opportunity to replace Paul Gunther.
According to a person close to the situation, Phillips wants to return to the NFL, and the Riders’ defensive coordinator job will be very interesting to him.
Late on Sunday, the Raiders removed Gunder and replaced him with defensive line coach Rod Marinelli on an interim basis.
Phillips has been out of football since splitting with the Los Angeles Rams after the 2019 season. In his three seasons in Los Angeles, the Rams beat NFC West in 2017 and advanced to the Super Bowl in the 2018 season.
According to football outsiders, Rams was the sixth, 18th and ninth most defensive defender in football and was a defensive coordinator with Phillips.
The Raiders’ investment in young players over the past two years and the presence of linebacker Corey Littleton and defender Lamarcus Joiner, who played successfully under Phillips in Los Angeles, have been very interesting to Phillips.
