“Monday morning samples firmly believe the temperature above the surface will be below freezing,” CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said. “If this happens, it will definitely increase New York City’s snowfall by more than 12 inches.”
If it falls more than a foot in New York City, it will be the heaviest snowfall the city has seen since a storm – or even a month – since the historic blizzard in January 2016.
The amount of snowfall will vary depending on the center of the storm tracks and where the heavier ice sheets are located.
Early guidance suggests that if New York were cool enough, the city would get anywhere from 8 to 14 inches of snow.
Boston is on the northern edge of the storm, and a very drastic change in rainfall levels can be seen depending on where the storm is heading. Residents can be found anywhere from a few inches to a foot of snow.
Washington is at the southern tip and sizes vary depending on how hot the air filters are within the city, with dust forecast anywhere from dust to half a foot.
“The slope with this storm could be very bare, with a total of snow approaching one foot, only a few inches separated by a district,” the National Weather Service said.
If the hot air mixes, you can see a mix of snow and ice in the Washington area.
The same warm air will bring the south mix of ice and snow through central and southwest Virginia and northwest North Carolina.
Winter storm clocks have already been issued in six states – North Carolina, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey – for severe snow and / or snow impacts. The New York and Boston National Weather Service offices will release the clocks late Monday.
Clear winds are also a concern, with some areas, especially along the coast, approaching blizzard conditions. Winds of 25 to 35 mph are possible, with winds blowing at speeds of up to 45 mph.
The models did not exactly agree on how quickly the early morning storm would leave the region on Thursday. Still, by that afternoon, most people will have gone without this system.
