Admission to the new COVID-19 hospital is declining as Iowa health workers begin vaccinations

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – COVID-19 vaccinations are underway in Iowa on Monday as UIHC health workers took Pfizer’s vaccine on board the first ship.

The Iowa Department of Public Health said Monday it will reduce COVID-19 enrollment in hospitals.

Currently a total of 764 Iowans are hospitalized with the virus. The government said 76 new hospitals had been admitted in the last 24 hours. This is the lowest number since October. Of the patients admitted to the hospital with the virus, 160 were in the ICU and 86 on ventilators.

An additional 665 COVID-19 cases were reported on Monday. In the last 24 hours, the government has reported an additional 59 COVID-19-related deaths.

As of 10:30 a.m., state data showed a total of 256,913 cases and 3,272 Govt-19-related deaths. Of those deaths, 3,000 listed COVID-19 as the underlying cause of death, and 273 listed COVID-19 as a single factor.

The government says 190,222 people have recovered from the virus since the outbreak began.

According to data available from the state, 2,208 COVID-19 trials were conducted, bringing the total to 1,284,911 since the outbreak began. According to these data, the positive rate in the last 24 hours was 30.1 percent.
