The New York Times has reported that Russian spies with knowledge of the poison were close to opposition leader Alexei Navalny when he exposed the poisoning, according to a report by Bellinggat, an investigative journalism expert who specializes in open source information.

According to the New York Times, the report points out that in August, three FSB officers pursued Navalny to Siberia. Phone records show that further information indicated that one of the agents was not far from the hotel where Navalny and his group were staying on November 20.
Later, Navalny started screaming in pain as he boarded a plane and was forced to land. He will soon fall into a coma.
Navalny was admitted to Germany for treatment in August and was released from hospital the following month. Hospital doctors pointed out that a complete recovery for Navalny was possible, but the long-term effects of the poison were not yet known.
A senior German security official confirmed to the Times that the information in Bellingat’s report was accurate. The same official said the German government had long known who was responsible for Navalny’s poisoning.
Putin is said to have suggested to other world leaders that he was poisoned by Navalny. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov suggested that Navalny had been poisoned while on a flight to Germany or Berlin for treatment.
