Michigan Congressman Paul Mitchell quits Republican, cites Trump’s efforts to thwart election

Michigan Congressman Paul Mitchell has left the Republican Party, citing efforts by President Donald Trump to thwart the election.

Mitchell was asked to change his party affiliation independently for the remainder of his term. He said the move is mostly symbolic and supports individual candidates who reflect the policies he evaluates.

If Republican leaders sit down together and stick to unsubstantiated conspiracy theories and stop ‘stealing’ rallies without speaking to our election process, which the Department of Homeland Security says is ‘the safest in American history’, our nation will be damaged. I spoke clearly and strongly against these messages. However, I fear that the Republican leadership and our Republican convention in the House will at least actively participate in at least some of these efforts, which will do long-term harm to our democracy. ”

Mitchell had previously announced his retirement from Congress and shared divisive thoughts about Flashpoint.
