Lyons has played various roles in the White House in recent years, becoming one of Trump’s closest confidants in the process. He replaced Rob Porter as secretary of staff at Porter’s departure in 2018 in the face of allegations of domestic abuse.
Lyon managed the flow of information to the president in his role as secretary of staff. He was reportedly considered for head of the Home Affairs Council earlier this year, but ultimately that job was for Brooke Rollins. Lyons was promoted to adviser to the president at the same time as Rollins got that position.

Bloomberg News first reported on the imminent departure of Lyons.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to work for President Trump in the White House and to fight for the American people alongside truly talented and dedicated colleagues,” Lyons said in a statement. “I am deeply grateful to the President for the opportunity to serve.”
It is unclear whether Lyons had planned to leave regardless of whether Trump won a second term, but he is one of the few top-level officials to address the exits, as the president refuses to grant the election.
