A Kansas mayor announced Tuesday that she resigned because of the threats she received after publicly supporting the city’s COVID-19 mask mandate.
Dodge City Mayor Joyce Warshaw told USA Today that she feared for her safety after residents threatened her by phone and email.
“I understand that people are pressured by various things that happen around society, such as the pandemic, politics, the economy, etc., but I also think that during these times people do not act as they normally would.” Warshaw said to the dam.
“I think it’s better for me and for the city that I love to retire from the commission right now and from the mayor’s office so that the city can move forward and be the best it can be, because I believe in the city.” .
In the December 11 USA Today article, Warshaw was quoted as saying she supported the mask’s mandate, which the city commission approved on Nov. 16.
“We just felt we had to do something to make everyone aware of the importance of everyone being responsible for the health and well-being of others,” the mayor said at the exit.
Dodge City police are investigating threats against Warshaw.
