ESPN 300 quarterback Jake Garcia on Wednesday announced his commitment to Miami, picking out hurricanes over the state of Florida and Arkansas.
Garcia is the No. 18 overall prospect at ESPN 300. The 6-foot, two-pound 190-pound prospect gives Miami nine ESPN 300 commitments in class, led by five-star defensive attack Leonard Taylor, the number 6. -classified recruit.
While Garcia posted on his Instagram page to announce the decision to his high school classmates, a announcer accidentally presented it as a Miami engagement.
Garcia then said the ad was a mistake and left the feed. He returned a few minutes later to announce his decision, but Miami was still the choice.
The quarterback was still a big necessity for Miami and Garcia offers the staff a great option for the future as he is second-ranked out of pocket.
Garcia had originally committed to USC, but turned it off earlier this month and eventually chose the hurricanes. Garcia has had a winding path to get to this point, as he had not completed a full season of high school football that would lead this senior season.
He backed up Matt Corral at Long Beach Polytechnic in California during Garcia’s freshman year, then moved to several high schools. Garcia, who is originally from California, moved to Valdosta High School in Georgia earlier this year, when California decided to postpone the high school season.
His father moved with him to Georgia, while his mother stayed in California. Garcia’s father, Randy, told ESPN that he and his wife, Yvonne, were legally separated to meet the Georgia High School Association’s transfer requirements.
The GHSA deemed him ineligible, so Garcia moved to Grayson High School in Loganville, Georgia, where he finished high school.
He will now move to Miami, where he will bring much-needed depth and competition to the quarterback. Staff signed ESPN 300 quarterback Tyler Van Dyke in the 2020 class and three-star Peyton Matocha in 2019. Eriq King’s incumbent is a senior this season and N’Kosi Perry is a junior.
