The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) announced today that 1 billion US dollars will be mobilizeds to help Latin American and Caribbean countries acquire and distribute COVID-19 vaccines.
The funds will complement the $ 1.2 billion in resources the IDB has committed to by 2020, as well as other resources already scheduled for 2021, to support aircraft in saving lives through public health measures, such as testing and tracking. more effective better clinical management of patients with the disease, explains a statement from the agency.
“We are expanding our support to help Latin American and Caribbean countries ensure timely access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines,” said IDB President Mauricio Claver-Carone.
He added that the coming months will be critical to alter the course of the pandemic and support the recovery of the region and that is why they are feeling bold and proactive.
The note explains that the IDB will support countries in three main areas: purchasing vaccine doses through multilateral efforts such as the COVAX Facility; institutional strengthening to help countries develop effective mechanisms for vaccine deployment; and investments to strengthen immunization capacity and finance operating costs.
To this end, it indicates that the IDB will work closely with other institutions, such as the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
In addition, the IDB is reinforcing its call on governments to redouble efforts in preparing for their domestic airliners and vaccinations. The agency stresses that it is ready to support the insurance of an implementation out in the region.
