MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A man is dead and another man and a woman injured after gunfire around 2 a.m. Thursday in southwest Miami-Dade, according to police.
Another woman was injured when her car crashed and turned upside down as she drove away from the scene of the shooting.
A group of people were outside a house in the SW 247th Terrace and SW 113th Court area when someone opened fire, Det said. Alvaro Zabaleta, of the Miami-Dade Police Department.
After a 911 call, police found the woman on the ground suffering from a firearm and she was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical but stable condition. Her brother identified her as Najah McNear, 22, and said she was shot in the leg.
An off-duty correctional officer was handcuffed and treated at the scene, according to authorities. The agent is a two-year veteran of the department, but his identity has not been released.
Homestead Hospital called police to report that a man appeared suffering from a firearm. That man was operated on but died. He has also not been identified yet, but police said he was 24 years old.
After the shooting, people in the area fled the scene, including a woman who was driving so fast that she did not see a parked vehicle. Police say his Nissan Altima hit the parked car and turned around.
She was taken to a local hospital with non-fatal injuries that suffered the shock.
In an exclusive interview with Local 10 News, McNear’s brother, Miguel, said his sister was simply trapped by the crossfire.
“He said he was shot in the leg. I was in the middle of the street calling for help, ”said Miguel.
He added that his sister was talking to a few friends away from home on SW 247th Terrace when someone from a vehicle stopped and started firing at someone from a Chevy Malibu, who was still at the scene, full of bullets.
“A car just ran and started firing at another man,” Miguel said. “I guess a boy grazed in his hand. The other was shot in the neck.
Miguel says his sister’s friend was driving the Altima he shot.
“When they started firing, he withdrew; you know, he protected himself and the car took a turn,” he said.
A woman living in the neighborhood recalled hearing gunshots from the bed.
“I had just slept in bed and felt like three savings,” Kathryn Ray said.
No arrests have been made. Miami-Dade police placed more than a dozen test markers at the scene Thursday morning and are looking for witnesses and surveillance video.
“There was an exchange of gunfire, but we keep trying to determine, of course, how this happened, who the people involved are,” Zabaleta said. “Any time shots are fired, the whole community is put at risk.”
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
