WASHINGTON – On Friday, the Supreme Court rejected the challenge to President Trump’s bid to exclude millions of undocumented immigrants from the 2020 census, giving the administration a victory.
In a 6-3 ruling, the bench described the challenge led by New York and immigrant rights groups as “premature” because the exact consequences and goals of the president’s actions were still “conjecture.”
“Currently, this case is full of contingencies and speculations that prevent judicial review,” the high court said.
“The president has certainly made clear his desire to exclude foreigners from the distribution base without legal status.”
“But the president qualified his directive by providing that the secretary should gather information“ as far as possible ”and that foreigners should be excluded“ as far as feasible, ”they added.
The Trump administration wants to exclude noncitizens from the census count that could drastically alter the representation some states receive in the House of Representatives, which is based on population.
If Trump were to succeed, the big democratic states like California and New York, which are home to large immigrant populations, and whose “sanctuary cities,” like the Big Apple, work to protect illegal aliens from federal law enforcement will likely be disproportionately affected.
Only California could lose two or three seats if the illegals are not counted in the 2020 census.
The census has already been conducted, but analysts at the U.S. Department of Commerce, which oversees the U.S. Census Bureau, are still trying to determine the number of undocumented immigrants in the country.
Trump and his legal team have argued that the plan is both constitutional and within its legal powers as president.
