Dozens of medical residents and fellows at Stanford University’s affiliated hospital held a protest Friday after being diverted to the back of the COVID-19 vaccination line, leaving administrators face to face. red to admit that the deployment had “defects”.
“First in the room, behind the line!” residents and colleagues sang in a protest at the Bay Area Hospital, Stanford Medical.
“We came out here after we learned that only seven of 1,349 residents were selected for the first wave of vaccinations,” third-year resident Charles Marcus told NBC during the protest.
The hospital quickly apologized.
“Our intention was to deploy an ethical and equitable plan for the entire organization, and there were flaws in that plan that we are actively trying to repair,” administrators said in a statement.
“We acknowledge the disappointment and anguish this has caused, and we thank those who brought us these concerns,” the statement said.
“We are immediately reviewing our plan to better sequence the distribution of the vaccine.”
It is possible that nurses, therapists, janitors and food service workers are also wasting time, protesters at the station said.
“We see all these people who should be part of the first wave of people accessing vaccines and telling us they are not,” said Angela Primbus, a third-year internal medicine resident.
