SUVA, Fiji – The death toll from a powerful cyclone that hit the Pacific island nation of Fiji last week has risen to four with one missing, an official said Sunday.
Although Cyclone Yasa saved the capital, Suva, on Thursday, and Nadi’s main resort on Fiji’s largest island, Viti Levu, was still assessing all the damage.
The director of Fiji’s National Disaster Management Office, Vasiti Soko, told reporters that 7,731 people were still in 183 evacuation centers across the country.
Soko said an Australian C-17 military transport was expected to arrive later on Sunday with protective equipment.
Before the cyclone collided with gusts of up to 345 kilometers per hour, authorities had imposed a curfew overnight and declared a state of natural disaster.
Located about a third of the way from New Zealand to Hawaii, Fiji has a population of about 930,000.
