Identifier 3 of police killed in New Year’s Eve shootings in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – Philadelphia police have identified three victims who were shot dead during a violent New Year’s Day across the city.

Police say an argument sparked a shooting in the Frankford section that left two men dead and one woman injured.

It happened around 2:19 p.m. Wednesday at block 4700 Griscom Street.

Javon Cooper, 24, and Malik Milburn, 27, suffered two gunshot wounds to the chest. Both were rushed to hospital, but were later pronounced dead.

A 32-year-old woman was shot in the arm and hands and is hospitalized in stable condition.

No arrests have been made.

In West Philadelphia, police were called to the area of 59th and Arch streets shortly before noon to report the shootings.

Police found a shooting victim, identified as 41-year-old Eric Miller, a block away on Hobart Street. He had gunshot wounds to his chest and back.

Miller was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

No arrests have been made.

Another shooting sent two men to the hospital and police say one of those victims, who was shot in the leg and just above the eye, is unlikely to survive.

It happened Wednesday at 7 p.m. on the 2200 block of Cleveland Street. Police say someone triggered a rain of bullets, about 18 in all.

The other victim was shot just below the waist. A SEPTA police officer found him running near Ridge Avenue and took him to the hospital.

The reason for the shooting is unclear, but police say the corner is known for drug sales. Investigators say the shot was captured in a surveillance video.

Philadelphia residents, of course, are disappointed and heartbroken to feel that not a full day in the New Year and the city are already dealing with three homicides in 2021.

“It’s sad. Someone dies every day and that’s where it’s really common. I’m sorry all the time and I just count my people in the house and I’m fine,” said Tina West of West Philadelphia

The year 2020 ended with a total of 356 homicides, the highest in the city since 2007.

When she was introduced by the mayor earlier this week, the city’s newly appointed police commissioner, Danielle Outlaw, vowed to be tough on gun violence.

“I will work tirelessly to reduce crime in Philadelphia, in particular, the insidious armed violence that plagues too many people in our communities,” Outlaw said.
He acknowledged that reducing violence is a process and requires a community effort.

“I ask each of you more than your support, I ask for your help. Your thoughts, your wisdom and your ideas,” Outlaw said.

Residents say they will support the new commissioner, but admit he will have a hard job.

“It won’t be easy, it’s not, I’m not and I pray that I can have the strength and know-how to do things,” Gordon said.

Meanwhile, police have not made any arrests in these three 2021 killings. If you have any information, please contact Philadelphia police.
