MANCHESTER, Ohio – The demolition company that lost workers at a southern Ohio power plant said Monday that recovery efforts for the latter will continue next month.
Patrick Crowley, a spokesman for the Detroit-based Adamo group, said recovery work is expected to be completed by mid or late January. He said in a statement that the company is taking the lead in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration in its recovery efforts and is fully cooperating with efforts to determine the cause of the Dec. 9 collapse.
The company has retained New York-based engineering firm Thornton Tomasetti to aid recovery efforts. Three site workers survived, while two were lost.
A worker whose body was found among the rubble was previously identified as a 42-year-old man in northeastern Kentucky, Doug Gray of Greenup County.
Another man – Jamie Fitzgerald, of Boyd County, Kentucky – is not recovering from the site of the Killen generation station.
Three more workers were rescued and sent to hospital for their injuries. The extent of the wounds is unknown.
On December 15, the Adamo group issued a statement saying it could take up to two weeks to five Fitzgerald due to heavy debris.
“We trust that your process will be understood in a way that does not pose a danger to the safety of people working in the recovery effort and that it will be done with the utmost sensitivity. thoughts and prayers continue for Jamie’s family, fiancé, friends and co-workers, ”wrote Adamo Group.
It is unknown what caused the collapse. The Adams County Sheriff’s Office said the roof of the power plant collapsed around 8:30 a.m. Dec. 9. There were workers preparing the building for demolition. The coal-fired power plant opened in 1982 and closed in May 2018. It is located about 75 miles east of Cincinnati.
