Tthe party or the party – This is the issue that makes many of us knot every year when New Year’s Eve revolts.
Of course, there is something to be said for ringing in a new year with your human companions, giving some champagne at midnight after a quick sip with a loved one or stranger. At bars or friends parties, I had a great time on New Year’s Eve. On the other hand, I also understand the instinct to avoid all of this. New Year’s Eve invites a lot of bar fans and it can be the hardest night of the year to take a taxi or Uber home when they arrive at 1 or 2 in the morning.
As you consider your options for transitioning to 2021, here are some of the most notable temptations happening in the region that may be too entertaining to resist:
FIND YOUR 80S GROOVE
The good people at Lucky You Lounge know that a costume can help turn the night into something special and different. While 80s New Year’s Eve does not require you to wear this jacket and / or member-only warmers, it is definitely recommended to dress for the season. They will have an 80s cover band, a DJ spinning some of the best dance songs of the era and a photo booth to capture your look. At just $ 10, it’s also a good budget option. Visit luckyoulounge.com for more information.
CLASS IT WITH
A couple of years ago I checked out the annual New Year’s Eve performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Spokane Symphony. The night is not only an exciting showcase for musicians and Spokane Symphony Chorale, but it also has the added benefit of finishing a couple of hours before midnight. That means you can get home right before the ball falls on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Eve, or you can treat the show as an appetizer for more downtown parties, perhaps the gala itself. Puttin ‘On the Ritz symphony at historic Davenport. . Visit spokanesymphony.org for more information.
LIGHT THE SKY
For some people, you can’t have New Year’s Eve without a fireworks display. The Coeur d’Alene Resort is here for you, with two fireworks shows in case you (or your kids) don’t arrive until midnight. The first is at 9pm and the second at midnight, both on the lake, so you’ll want to find a good spot on the resort or on the beach to see it. You can spend the whole night with a buffet dinner and a dance party at the resort. Visit cdaresort.com for more information.
BLUES DUDE
If you didn’t catch Sammy Eubanks kicking him off at his annual Christmas show, you have a couple of options for listening to the local blues guitarist break him on New Year’s Eve. At the Bing Crosby Theater, he will attend an early show at 6 p.m., accompanied by Trailer Park Girls and Low Class Bluegrass. This show will end at 8:12 p.m., so Eubanks can run over to the Ruby River Hotel to party from 9:30 p.m. to midnight. You can choose any show or do it all night and spend the night at the hotel as well. Visit bingcrosbytheater.com for more information.
THROW THE DICE
I’m not going to suggest that the game be for everyone, but if you go to one of the local casinos for their New Year’s Eve parties, you can also throw a couple of bucks at the table or slot machine and see if you can really start the new year well. At Northern Quest Resort & Casino there are several New Year’s Eve events, including a 1920s party on the Taphouse shore, but the Bootie Shakers playing a bunch of nightclubs in the Pavilion are surely the highlight. Visit northernquest.com to see all the options.
At Alene Casino in Worley, Idaho, you can see CeCe Curtis ’tribute to local jazz legend and tribe member Mildred Bailey. And in the casino’s Nighthawk Lounge, he catches local legend Donnie Emerson (of the Fruitland Emersons) along with the Nancy Sophia Band. Visit cdacasino.com for more information.
Of course, there are many parties and celebrations that deserve to be considered New Year’s Eve. Be sure to check out the December 31 calendar listings at Inlander.com for a wide range of 1920s-themed parties, live music, special dinners and trivia nights, and more. ♦
