Berkeley: No waste collection on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day

December 22, 2021

Waste collection was postponed one day for winter holidays

Berkeley, California (Tuesday, December 22, 2021): There will be no waste collection, recycling or composting on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day. For commercial and residential customers with regular Friday collections, collection will be on Saturday.

Place the carts on the edge of the 7 o’clock in the morning. Collection may occur later than normal day. If your collection is more than a day late, call (510) 981-7270 to report a lost collection.

All Saturday commercial pick-ups will be held on Saturday, as scheduled regularly.

Removal of holiday trees

When you are ready to remove your holiday tree, remove all lights, decorations, tinsel, plastic bags, and plastic holders. You can cut down trees and place them in the cart to pick them up on the sidewalk or leave whole trees in the city’s shuttle station.

Curbside Collection

Cut the tree to fit the green plant waste cart with the lid closed. Entire trees can damage city pickup trucks and will not be picked up if left on the curb.

Flocked or “snowed” trees are not compostable. If you have a flocked tree, cut it down and place it in the trash can.

If you don’t have tools to cut down the tree to fit the cart, the Berkeley Tool Loan Library is a great resource for renting free tools.

Fallen tree

You can also drop off holiday trees at the city’s shuttle station at 1201 2nd Street (next to Gilman). Remember to remove all lights and decorations before carrying the tree.

The transfer station will take compostable trees for free until the end of January. There is a $ 29 fee to leave plastic or flocked trees.

The shuttle station is open from Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 4.30 pm and will be closed on Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
