Happy almost 2021! Since this is the last column of 2021 and because I know we all want to embark on a new year, I thought I would dedicate myself to watching three great YA novels celebrating the turn of a year into another. While any time is a great opportunity to make a change or a resolution, we tend to put in a lot of action to make January 1st feel special and I think there’s something refreshing in the new calendar pages that help us to clarify our intentions (and I personally love starting a new reading record). These books look at New Year’s traditions and resolutions in fun ways and are a great way to pass the time until 2021.
Note: Only one of these books is by a color author. As I mentioned earlier this month, we need more books on color authors about the holidays.
Lee Matthews New Year’s kiss
It’s a fun romance about Tess and her older sister Lauren, who are sent to her grandmother’s Vermont resort for the New Year’s holidays. Her grandmother doesn’t know exactly how to be warm and loving, so Tess rushes to check out the items on the New Year’s deposit list … and asks Christopher, the cute guy she meets in the lobby, for help. As they ski and celebrate the season, Tess has no idea that Christopher is keeping a big secret that could leave her alone when midnight arrives.
The resolutions of Mia Garcia
Who here likes to make New Year’s resolutions? Do you really stay with them? In this novel, which begins earlier this year, four of Latinx’s best friends get together to make their annual New Year’s resolutions … but decide to mix things up by assigning resolutions. The following year, they will be challenged, supported and surprised in many ways as they meet their resolutions and face a new year that will see them graduate and go in different directions.
A castle in the clouds by Kerstin Gier
Sophie is housed in a beautiful old hotel in the Swiss mountains, where tradition and greatness reign. Every year, on New Year’s Eve, there is a big party that attracts glamorous guests everywhere. This holiday season, Sophie works hard to make sure everything is working properly, but amidst unexpected guests, secret identities, and some surprises popping up along the way, Sophie is dragged into a high-stakes adventure. I loved the time travel trilogy of Gier (starting with Ruby red), and this looks like a fantastic YA in translation.
See you next year, friends! Happy New Year!
