Since the launch of the AirPods Max last week, we’ve made a couple of videos sharing a brief practice with Apple’s new over-ear headphones and their comparison to other popular Bose, Sony and Sennheiser noise canceling headphones . .

IrAirPods Max‌ are made mainly of metal, with aluminum headphones and stainless steel telescopic arms, which give them a pleasant touch of quality. This metal part means, however, that ‌AirPods Max‌ are much heavier than many competing headphones, which can be a problem for some users. But we have found that the mesh headband does an excellent job distributing this weight over the head for maximum comfort.

Noise cancellation

One of the main reasons why people buy over-ear headphones is active noise cancellation (ANC) and we have found that ‌AirPods Max‌ offer excellent features in this regard. In our experience, it is difficult to hear anything from our surroundings while carrying the irAirPods Max‌ with the ANC activated.

Of course, you can turn off the ANC if you want to hear more around you, but there’s also the transparency mode that keeps the ANC turned on but surrounds the sound, and we’ve found that it allows us to hear enough without being too much of a distraction.

Audio quality

While the irAirPods Max‌ do not match the high-quality wired headphones, we were impressed by the sound that the ‌AirPods Max‌ can emit via Bluetooth. The sound profile of the irAirPods Max‌ is well balanced and not too aggressive towards highs or lows.

With H1 chips in each headset, irAirPods Max‌ use computer audio to adjust what you’re listening to in real time, customizing it to suit your head and other factors. And while we don’t recommend turning up the volume too loud, we found that the sound quality remains solid even at higher volume levels, delivering clear, distortion-free sound.

Chip H1

Speaking of these H1 chips, they offer more than good audio quality. They are also the key component that integrates the irAirPods Max‌ into Apple’s ecosystem. As with the AirPods and recent Beats headphones, the H1 chip supports seamless audio pairing and switching between devices paired with your iCloud account. If you listen to music from your iPhone and then grab your iPad to start watching a video, irAirPods Max can automatically switch to start playing audio from your iPad.

Everything is customizable, of course, so you can select which devices you want to take over audio sources automatically, and even if you turn off automatic switching of a device, it only takes a couple of taps to switch manually.

Space audio

Finally, there is Spatial Audio, a new feature that Apple recently launched on AirPods Pro and is also included in ‌AirPods Max‌. Space audio offers an immersive 3D audio experience with compatible content, and while we initially thought it would be quite contrived, we quickly proved ourselves wrong. You really have to experiment to make yourself believe, but it makes it seem like the audio is coming from your environment, but anchored by the device you’re viewing the content on.

So if you watch a program on Apple TV + on your PiPad‌, for example, you get a surround sound experience that is very enjoyable on its own, but if you turn your head or move the ‌iPad‌, the audio adjusts on the fly to match the relative orientation of the head and the “iPad.” It’s a great experience that will make you think that your headphones have stopped working and that your PiPad‌ is ejecting audio from its own speakers.
