Facebook announced Thursday that it has removed the page from Australian celebrity chef Pete Evans because he shared misinformation about the coronavirus on the platform.
“We do not allow anyone to share misinformation about COVID-19 that could cause imminent physical harm or (over) COVID-19 vaccines that have been denied by public health experts,” Facebook said in a statement, according to Reuters.
Evans, who has been accused of being a conspiracy theorist, routinely shared unproven claims on his Facebook page calling the coronavirus pandemic “a joke” and “BS.” on his Facebook account, Reuters reported.
“We have clear policies against this type of content and we have removed chef Pete Evans’ Facebook page for repeated violations of those policies, ”Facebook said, according to Reuters.
Evans has also encouraged his Facebook followers not to get tested for the virus. Last month he announced to his Instagram followers that he would no longer post on Facebook, but continued until his page was officially removed on Thursday.
Facebook, which owns Instagram, has not said why it allowed Evan’s Instagram account to remain active, Reuters reported.
The social media giant announced earlier this month that it would begin eliminating misinformation about the coronavirus vaccine in an attempt to further manage the misinformation on the platform.
