Alamance County confirms third case of rabies in dog :: WRAL.com

– Alamance County reported its third case of rabies on Dec. 23.

The animal control was notified of a dog bite involving three people near Hester Road in Burlington, officials said.

Once the animal control picked up the dog, it was euthanized for human reasons and subsequently tested positive for rabies. Four other dogs participated in the incident to which the animal control responded. Two of the dogs were up to date on their vaccinations.

These two dogs that received vaccination reinforcements are undergoing a 45-day quarantine, according to Alamance County officials.

If you live in the Hester Road area of ​​Burlington and have pets, the health department urges you to examine your pet for any injuries or signs that have come in contact with the infected dog. If you believe your pet has come in contact with this dog, please notify Alamance County Animal Control.

Last year, the county saw seven cases of rabies with animals.

North Carolina requires that cats and dogs be vaccinated against rabies, officials said.

Alamance County officials warn if an animal bites you at:

  • Wash the wound with soap and running water for 10 minutes
  • Write down where you bit and a description of the animal
  • Do not try to catch any wild or lost animals
