An NYPD officer shot Brooklyn and rushed to the hospital; suspect arrested

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (WABC) – A NYPD officer was taken to Kings County Hospital after being shot in the back in Brooklyn Thursday night.

Authorities say the incident took place on Bergen Street and Ralph Avenue in the Crown Heights section shortly before 9 p.m.

At a news conference, NYPD commissioner Dermot Shea said calls arrived over a domestic incident involving a female victim and her boyfriend.

Officials say the woman’s mother reported that the groom was going to “come and shoot the place.”

When officers arrived at the house and began interviewing the daughter, the suspect arrived and shot at the officers.

Officials say a 27-year-old officer was hit once in the back.

Luckily, the bullet penetrated his vest, but it did not penetrate his skin.

“He’s in a bit of pain, but he’s in a very good mood and we anticipate he’ll be home soon,” Shea said.

He says the officer, from the 77th district, has 2.5 years of service in the NYPD.

As for the suspect, police say he is a 20-year-old man with a known previous domestic incident.

They say that after firing the shot, the suspect fled on foot with officers chasing him.

Shea says two officers fired at least seven shots.

The chase on foot lasted a block or two before police reached the suspect and ordered him to drop his weapon.

The suspect threw the gun and officers made the arrest.

According to officials, the suspect was not shot during the incident.

“It’s Christmas Eve, it’s a time when you expect peace, you expect harmony,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “A man threatened his girlfriend, threatened her violently, said he was coming to hurt her, that’s what happened tonight in Brooklyn and since the NYPD was there, this woman is alive right now.”

The video of the scene captured what appeared to be carcasses on the street.

The NYPD released an image of the suspect’s firearm that was recovered at the scene.

They say the officer was initially taken to Kings County Hospital.

“We have to stop saying we’re lucky … we have to start asking, why is this happening?” New York City PBA President Pat Lynch said.

Officials from the Crime Scene Unit Investigation Division and the Force Investigation Division were at the scene Thursday at the end.
