Apple confirms the solution for ultra-wide monitors with M1 Apple Silicon Macs

Users of certain ultra-super and ultra-ultra external monitors report that some resolutions are not available when used with an Apple Mac Silicon M1, but Apple says a solution is being reached.

Apple-based Apple Silicon M1-based Macs replaced compatible external monitors, but now an unknown number of users report issues with limited resolution options.

Specifically, when screens called ultrawide or super-ultrawide are connected to the new Macs M1, macOS Big Sur does not offer the option to use certain resolutions. These monitors are built to display various resolutions, but simply do not appear in the list System preferences, Visualization panel.

“Apple is aware of this problem,” the company says in a new support document, “and the resolution is slated for a future macOS update.”

The problem was first seen by MacRumors. Apple has not confirmed when a fix will be released and only adds that “this document will be updated as more information becomes available.”

It is also not clear to what extent the problem is widespread or whether it affects only some brands of monitors. The new 13-inch MacBook Pro and the M1-based MacBook Air are limited to supporting only one external monitor, unlike Intel’s multiple previous versions.

The new Mac mini has a similar limitation and only an external display is allowed via DisplayPort. However, it is possible to run a second monitor from the Mac mini via HDMI.
