A gunman in Philadelphia was shot dead by officers after he opened fire on a crowd in a wild Christmas morning scene that also left one teenager dead and another injured, police said.
The incident occurred around 12:20 a.m. Friday, when officers responded to a dispute between residents of the Port Richmond neighborhood, NBC Philadelphia reported.
Once on the scene, they met a group of 10 to 15 people starting to fight.
When officers tried to break them, a 40-year-old man came out of a nearby property and shot at the crowd, police said.
Officers fired back, hitting the shooter several times and killing him, police said.
Two teenagers were also hit by gunfire, which killed one of them and injured the other, police said.
Police said it is unclear who shot the teenagers.
“We’re not entirely sure, but (the gunman) was firing at that crowd where those passers-by were,” the Philadelphia police sergeant said. Eric Gripp said.
None of the police officers involved were injured.
“This was a terrible tragedy … we are just praying for everyone involved,” Gripp said, according to the WPVI news channel.
“We are sorry for the lives lost, but we are also incredibly grateful that our agents are safe this morning.”
