After several delays in the release date and a lot of bubbles among the fans, Wonder Woman 1984 has officially arrived. The DC Comics-inspired film made its Christmas debut, with viewers able to check it out in both select theaters and the HBO Max broadcast service. For those who immediately checked out the film, there is certainly a lot to take advantage of, as the almost three-hour blockbuster includes many gestures in the story of the Amazon Princess. While this was the case with the film itself, it became very clear in the film’s middle credits scene. Main spoilers for Wonder Woman 1984 down! Just look if you want to know.
Earlier in the film, Diana Prince / Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) tells the story of her Golden Eagle armor, which she has hidden in her base of operations in her Washington, DC apartment. As Diana tells the newly resurrected Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), the armor was worn by the greatest champion of the Amazons: Asteria, a legendary warrior who remained in the world of man when Zeus created Themyscira.
Fast forward to the middle credits scene, which shows a brunette woman walking down a city square in a blue dress. After a nearby stick breaks and nearly crushes nearby civilians, the woman instantly holds her and saves the day, and turns to reveal her face. It is Asteria, played by none other than legendary Wonderful woman actress Lynda Carter. Asteria introduces himself to one of the civilians and hints at his story, before remarking that he has been “doing this for a long time.”
The moment is certainly epic, that is, because it pays homage to the original version of Carter as Wonder Woman, in the eponymous television program that was originally aired from 1975 to 1979 (which was added to HBO Max earlier this week). He also canonizes Carter within the modern DC Films universe, something fans have been excited about the possibility for a long time.
“I talked to him [director] Patty Jenkins. He talked to me over the phone about the character and we were trying to see if I could do anything with him [first Wonder Woman] film, but it didn’t work, “Carter said in an interview with Variety in 2016. “Time was out of service, I was doing other things and couldn’t get as far as they were shooting.”
And with a derivation of the Amazons in the works, and Wonder Woman 3 although it is a possibility, it is not known exactly where we might see Asteria afterwards.
