A new leak from Nintendo has revealed a huge feature of Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite that was inexplicably cut before the first one was released in 2017. The news comes courtesy of the Nintendo archives and courtesy of a 2014 document which reveals a number of details related to the origins of the console, including its original design, which bears no resemblance to the final product. In addition to revealing the original design of the console, the documents reveal that the plan was to include 3D video support in order to allow the console to be compatible with the Nintendo 3DS.
It is not entirely clear whether Nintendo was planning universal support backwards and it is unclear why this feature was rejected, but the document reveals that much of Nintendo’s early plans for the Switch were either cut before they were released. or changed.
For example, while the Nintendo Switch finished with a 720p screen, in 2014, the plan was for the screen to be only 480p. Again, it’s not clear why Nintendo changed its mind here, but it’s good that it did.
Meanwhile, perhaps tying back 3DS compatibility backwards, Nintendo hadn’t decided if the Switch would have one or two screens. Of course, it is very possible that there is 480p on the table in order to facilitate the possibility of two screens.
Right now, Nintendo has not validated any of these details. In other words, while the documents leave little room for doubt, they and the information they disclose should be taken with a grain of salt. That said, if Nintendo provides any sort of leak-related comment statement, we’ll be sure to update the story accordingly.
