Los Angeles residents are able to add COVID vaccination tests to Apple Wallet

Los Angeles County residents receiving a vaccine against COVID-19 can add a digital record of their vaccination to the Apple Wallet app, it reports Bloomberg.

The county is partnering with Healthvana to add the vaccination test to the iPhone Wallet app. Healthvana is a patient platform that healthcare providers can use to deliver COVID-19 test results to patients.

The vaccination record helps to ensure that vaccinated people receive the second shot in the two-dose procedure and in the future, Bloomberg speculates that it could be used as a vaccination test to access flights, concerts and more.

For now, Wallet’s vaccination record will alert people who have had the first shot on their second appointment to make sure each person is fully vaccinated.

“We’re really worried. We want people to come back for this second dose,” said Claire Jarashow, Los Angeles’s director of vaccine-preventable disease control. Bloomberg. “We just don’t have the capacity to make hundreds of medical record applications to find the first doses of people and when they need to get the second.”

Vaccinations are also tracked in the logs and vaccinated people receive a paper card, but that card is easily lost, so the Wallet app serves as the most permanent test.

The county plans to send data to Healthvana every night, with information stored on Amazon Web Services’ HIPAA-compliant servers. Jarashow said Bloomberg that it is as “safe as we can make it” and that it “felt comfortable using it.”

As of December 22, Los Angeles had administered at least 38,850 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to health care providers, long-term care facility residents, and paramedics.
