Villeda Morales Airport is ready for international flights

San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

Ramon Villeda Morales International Airport is ready for international flights.

From December 23, the air terminal resumed operations with domestic flights. CM Airlines is currently the only airline it offers flights to Roatan, La Ceiba and Tegucigalpa from San Pedro Sula.

Although storms Eta and Iota wreaked havoc on Villeda Morales, which forced it to remain closed for 47 days, the terminal is slowly regaining its strength and is set to become Honduras’ most active city again. .

Authorities said domestic flights had been enabled since December 23 aircraft category A and B, Which are usually composed of turboprop aircraft.

Since then they have continued to work under the supervision of the Honduran Agency of Civil Aeronautics (Ahac) and the Central American Air Navigation Services Corporation (Cocesna) to safely rehabilitate commercial, passenger and cargo air navigation.

In this sense, “after concluding the calibration process carried out by the Cocesna laboratory aircraft have determined to enable the airport from yesterday at 5:00 pm for operation with RNP (formerly ARNAV) which can be used to the national and international airlines with capacities and certifications to execute these procedures and in this way are enabled to operate the categories of aircraft C id in schedule daytime operation from the departure until the sunset “, indicates the issued emissary by Honduran Company Airport Infrastructure and Services (Ehisa).

The writ also highlights that international flights are still enabled with restrictions, which are described in the various Notam’s published, with acceptable levels of operational safety allowing all airlines that can perform these procedures to operate.

Michael Wehmeyer, president of the Honduran Association of Airlines (Ahla), stated that the airlines were waiting for the authorization of Class C and D aircraft to do flight planning.

It should be noted that the airlines American Airlines, Sosa and Lanhsa have announced in a statement the start of operations from 14 and 15 January from Villeda Morales.

“After the pandemic many of the airlines had to reduce their capacity, their amount of aircraft and also available crew and there are service standards that airlines must meet, ”he indicated.

Wehmeyer said that so far all the airlines operating in the Villeda are willing and interested in returning because it is very profitable for them.

Mònica Martel d’Aguilar, member of the Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies of Honduras, opined that the non-operation of international flights affects the sale of tickets and tour packages.

“Flights departing from San Pedro Sula are attractively priced, prices from Tegucigalpa and Roatan are higher,” Martel explained.
