Tthe English FA has issued a three-match ban Manchester United front Edinson Cavani for an Instagram post to a friend who considered himself racist.
Cavani received a message from a former team-mate after scoring twice in a 3-2 win at Southampton in November, to which the former PSG player used the word “bold” and thanked him.
Despite being a term of affection in this context in Latin America, the FA considered it a punishable offense and, in addition to a three-game ban, fined him £ 100,000.
“As he has stated, Edinson Cavani was unaware that his words could have been misinterpreted and sincerely apologized for the charge and for anyone who had been offended,” Manchester United responded to the charge.
“Despite his honest belief that he was simply sending affectionate thanks in response to a congratulatory message from a close friend, he chose not to challenge the accusation out of respect and solidarity with the FA and the fight against racism in football.” .
