Two different folding iPhone prototypes supposedly pass top quality controls

A new report states that the folding tests of the Foxconn iPhone consisted of two completely separate designs and that both have passed the quality control of the assembler.

Following previous rumors that Foxconn was testing a foldable iPhone, a new report says it was in fact testing two competitive designs for Apple. The tests were carried out at Foxconn’s Shenzhen factory and are said to have concluded with the two designs passing quality control.

Seconds Money UDN, what was tested were not the finished phones, but the housings of these two folding designs with presumably screens. The tests were specifically to measure the durability of the folding mechanism.

One of the designs is said to resemble the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip or the Lenovo Moto RAZR, with an internal folding screen flip-phone style. The other is said to be a dual-screen model, more like an open book like the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

Money UDN speculates that Apple will further evaluate the two models and then abandon one.

Apple’s tests of foldable iPhone designs follow many rumors from many years and many patent applications on the subject. Previous reports on Foxconn testing include claims that Apple will launch a foldable iPhone in September 2022.

UDN has a decent track record when it comes to Apple’s supply chain. It has a much poorer value in predicting Apple’s future product plans. Thursday’s report is a hybrid of the two.
