Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
the consulate of Mexico in San Pedro Sula issued a statement yesterday warning Hondurans planning to leave in caravans bound for the United States, that the Aztec country will act in accordance with the immigration law.
This is in response to the announcement circulating of the departure of the first caravan of migrants for the next January 15th.
“The Government of Mexico will continue to act responsibly, in accordance with its migration law and the health measures implemented to combat the covid-19 pandemic,” says the document.
Mexico says it does not promote or allow the irregular entry of caravans of migrants into its territory. “Mexico promotes safe, orderly and regular migration based on the principle of shared international responsibility “.
These migratory movements explain that they are irregular movements of people who carry great risks and that in a situation like the current one, characterized by the covid pandemic, plus the possibility of being victims of organized crime and insecurity, they point out that migrants they may have greater suffering along the way.
“The Government of Mexico requests that migrants seeking to enter Mexico do so on a regular basis, with full respect for established migration provisions and health protocols.” refers to the statement.
The asylum agreement
Less than a month after the end of President Donald Trump’s term, agreements were signed and entered into force with El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, countries in the North American Central Triangle, which allows the return to these countries of migrants crossing their territories to reach United States and apply for asylum.
This agreement is similar to Migrant Protection Memorandum (MPP), A program initiated by the Trump administration in 2019, by which tens of thousands of people who arrived on the southern border of the United States seeking asylum have been returned to Mexico. “Honduras based on international and national regulations guarantees the right to asylum for migrants passing through Honduran territory, as long as they meet the requirements, now Honduras will implement the agreement,” said Lisandro Rosales, chancellor of Honduras.
This agreement will allow the sending of certain eligible migrants seeking humanitarian protection in each of the countries and will prevent them from waiting long periods at the borders.
