Nine nuns have died of COVID-19-related causes at a New York State convent in just over a month, county officials said
Albany County is aware of the deaths of St Joseph of Carondelet sisters in Latham, county spokeswoman Mary Rozak said in an email to the Times Union on behalf of the county health commissioner , Elizabeth Whalen.
“Four of the deaths associated with the congregation had been previously reported earlier this month by hospitals,” Whalen said in the statement. “The other five were not reported to the Albany County health department for installation.”
WNYT-TV reported on Dec. 11 that 22 sisters tested positive for coronavirus in St. Louis. Joseph.
According to its website, the convent hosts 140 nuns.
A spokeswoman for the convent, Sister Mary Rose Noonan, was unprepared to issue a statement, according to Mary DeTurris Poust, a spokeswoman for the Roman Catholic diocese of Albany.
