Seven children killed in a two-vehicle accident in California set fire to the vehicle

A horrific crash on California’s rural highway killed nine people, including seven children, officials said.

The head-on collision occurred around 8pm on New Year’s Day on Highway 33, about 90 minutes north of Bakersfield, when the driver of a 2013 Dodge apparently veered off the road, according to reported Agent Rory Marks in the Los Angeles Times.

The motorist, a 28-year-old man, was then over-corrected, and ended up hitting a Ford in a northerly direction carrying seven children and an adult, authorities reported.

The impact set the Ford on fire. All the victims were declared dead at the scene and had not yet been identified as of Saturday.

“We have no evidence of that, other than the people who got there,” Marks told the newspaper. “We seek help if anyone knows anything.”

The cause of the accident is being investigated.
