Apple’s new Max AirPods have a potentially serious problem

Through Twitter, Reddit (1,2,3,4) and Apple Forums, owners of Apple’s $ 550 AirPods Max, report problems with condensation buildup inside their headphones after only a few hours of use. In addition, this can be caused by an unsolvable design flaw.

I just had to remove the pads while I was cleaning them and I noticed all this condensation inside and in the driver. And it’s weird because I don’t move at all. It really scared me. “

“So I have the Max AirPods for just under a week and I have noticed that after prolonged use there is a good amount of condensation inside the headset. It is quite noticeable when the magnetic cushions come off the ears. ”
It also gets worse. Apple not only decided (controversially) not to make the AirPods Max water-resistant, but it seems that the company’s decision to make the headphones with aluminum is the cause of the problem. Aluminum stands out, but it’s a poor insulator that, as users have pointed out, probably creates the problem of condensation due to heat buildup when carrying the (also heavy) AirPods Max over time. If this owner theory is correct, there is no easy way to solve it. Which may also explain why almost all rivals use plastic.

Also, while Apple has not made any public comments on the subject (I have submitted a press release), the company’s technical support response suggests that it will now be in your pocket:

Given that this condensation problem can affect the longevity of headphones and cause additional costs for a product that is already ultra premium, the smart step would be to wait and see how it works. With the AirPods Max currently sold out until March, this shouldn’t be a problem, but it demonstrates the danger of rushing to buy a first-generation product.
Meanwhile, AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 3 will arrive soon, while Apple also looks like it has something even better on the net.
