The governor announces new unemployment benefit for about 60,000 workers

Just over 24 hours after officially taking over the country, Governor Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia announced, along with the Secretary of the Department of Labor and Human Resources (DTRH), Carlos J. Rivera Santiago, the signing of an agreement that allocates an additional compensation of $ 100 per week to unemployment beneficiaries belonging to the salaried sector, but, in turn, generated self-employed income that reached or exceeded $ 5,000 during the contributory year 2019.

“I reiterate that my government will take advantage of all available and necessary resources for Puerto Rican families to have economic relief within the loss of income that has caused the effect of COVID-19. Part of our agenda is to identify and to give course to all those aids that improve the financial situation of our families and, that as well allow to stimulate the economy in the island “, The governor expressed in written statements.

The Mixed Unemployment Compensation Program (MEUC) directly benefits those workers who do not qualify to receive the PUA, as they are eligible for unemployment.

“We have identified that about 60,000 people could qualify with the requirements, which would represent an economic impact of about $ 65 million. I thank the governor for the diligence with which I sign such an important initiative,” he said. of Labor.
